Curator Spotlight: French Express

In 2010, Toronto-born Leon Oziel took his passion for house music and penchant for discovering new talent to the next level. He turned the name of his blog, French Express, into a record label and recruited artists such as Chris Malinchak and Moon Boots to the roster. The French Express posse will bring their musical crusade to Mysteryland USA this year! We can’t wait to tell you which members will be coming along for the ride! In the meantime, vibe out to our special French Express playlist !

Ready for story time? Here are five fun facts about our beloved MLUSA curator, French Express.

First thing’s first, French Express did not start out as a label. It all began with a…

BLOG! Leon tells DAZED, “Back in '08, I was scouting/reviewing tunes for the wavemaker of music discovery blogs at the time, Discodust, as well as my own blog French Express. After noticing the talent we've uncovered and plugged (like the once undiscovered Azari & III, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, and others) get scooped up off our plate by A&R and label managers, I started to realise what was going on.” The rest is history. We’re still hot over this Mixmag Lab live performance of a few members of the French Express crew, Jonas Rathsman, Moon Boots, and Isaac Tichauer. Cheeeeck it!

And then there’s this recent ‘did you know?’ tidbit…

It was announced last week that label head, Leon Oziel, will no longer go by his DJ alias, Perseus. Leon penned via Soundcloud, “this doesn’t mark the end of the journey for perseus, but the beginning of a new one under my own name leon oziel…this mix represents where i’m going, where i’ve been and where i came from.” Then, BOOM! He hits us with a swoon-worthy techno mix! Listen up.

Also, a piano is involved with the story because…

French Express signee, Chris Malinchak, learned the piano as a child prior to dabbling in music software. Chris has the gift of producing retro-futuristic disco hooks, but maybe he’ll drop some Beethoven at MLUSA.

While we’re daydreaming of classical sonata-meets-disco, we’re also tickled that…

Moon Boots doesn’t actually own official Moon Boots footwear. *gasp* His name is still pretty cool sans literal Moon Boots. He told the blog, Less Than 3, that he came across his DJ name nearly by accident. MB states, “It came from a song I’d been listening to a lot at the time, and I think it reflects a lot in the sound because even if people have never heard of my music before, they just kind of smile and they’re like, ‘Okay cool, I get it.’ It’s something welcoming, but also funky and otherworldly.” You win, Mr. Boots. Oh, and we also love this pic of you.

Okay, this last fact involves YOU! We’re giving you a taste of Mysteryland USA this Saturday. Our curator, Zeitgeist, will host a French Express showcase at Verboten. Click here to reveal the awesomeness.
