Curator Spotlight: Zeitgeist

Last week, co-founder John Perez of one of Brooklyn’s most dynamic nighttime spots, Verboten, gave us his thoughts on the current New York music scene, what it means to be a part of the Verboten family, and a bit about what the crew has planned for Mysteryland 2015. Today, the inside scoop continues…

In addition to hosting deep house yoga classes, burlesque shows, art galleries, and more – Verboten is the home of Zeitgeist. This weekly indie dance and nu disco party is described by John as being “diverse, fun, [with] cutting edge music.” Sign us up. Oh, wait – we already did that. You can catch the Verboten and Zeitgeist experience at MLUSA this year. Here, John dishes about the “spirit of the times” aka Zeitgeist.

What’s one thing that fans would be surprised to know about the party (Zeitgeist)?

For how new it is, the party has attracted some really big names, including Jamie XX, Chromeo, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terje, French Express, Hot Chip, [and] etcetera. Oh, and Reggie Watts is a big fan.

What was the funniest, craziest, [or] most bizarre thing that ever happened at one of the Zeitgeist nights?

We had a big Devil's Night Halloween party with an oversized photo booth sponsored by Don Julio. Let's just say that devil costumes, tequila, and a private booth led to three partygoers having an extra devilish night.

What does Zeitgeist have to look forward to in 2015?

After really hitting our stride with the indie dance and nu disco sound, we're looking forward to branching out into a wider range of music, including more live shows, some bass music, and real up-and-coming talent.
